What is Haidong Gumdo?

Haidong Gumdo is a dynamic, fast and powerful sword fighting art whose origins lie on the battlefields of ancient Korea. This martial art involves fighting against several (fictional) opponents who are armed in different ways and is constantly changing, alive and adapted to our times.

The Spirit of Haidong Gumdo

Haidong Gumdo not only aims to develop physical strength, but also conveys the spirit of this martial art. It is based on the principles of respect, mastery, importance, the right path, loyalty, filial piety, decency and justice.

The training

In Haidong Gumdo, great importance is placed on etiquette, and training is carried out in a disciplined manner, following strict rules of conduct. There are eight student grades (Keup) and master grades (DAN), which are achieved through examinations. Grading is indicated by colored belts, with DAN grades wearing black belts. Training includes basics, forms, restricted and free sparring, setup and cutting exercises, mostly using wooden or padded plastic swords. Safety is the top priority, and exercises are carried out with a safe distance between students. The clothing, called the dobok, consists of a short-sleeved top and loose trousers. Beginners traditionally wear black doboks, while masters/instructors wear blue doboks. The development from beginners to knowledgeable is symbolically represented by the transition from night (black) to day (blue). Masters from 2nd DAN who are trained as instructors also wear white and black checked trousers. Students are taught by instructors, most of whom have a Dan grade, and the training to become an instructor usually takes about two years.

How do you train Haidong Gumdo (up to 1st DAN)?

After joint greeting rituals, breathing and meditation exercises follow, as well as a communal, careful warm-up (Ki Qung) to prepare the body and mind for the upcoming training. An integral part of every training session are the basic techniques (Kibon Dongjak), followed by individual training for students up to 1st DAN, which consists of eight fixed sword forms, eight fencing exercises with and without a partner, eight different ways of drawing and stowing swords, cutting exercises with wooden and aluminum swords, and theoretical basics such as history, philosophy, etiquette and rules. Fun and games round off the training, depending on the participants.
